October 21 Microsoft Research AutoCollage Touch 2009 supportSome customers acquiring new computers with Windows 7 will have a welcome surprise: they will receive a pre-installed and pre-registered copy of Microsoft Research AutoCollage Touch 2009, an advanced computer vision and image processing program which automatically creates collages of your pictures. This application showcases the same AutoCollage technology previously available through Microsoft Research AutoCollage 2008. However, the user experience has been modified to also showcase the touch and multi-touch capabilities of Windows 7. AutoCollage Touch 2009 is not an upgrade to the previously released AutoCollage 2008 versions. While the user license for AutoCollage 2008 allowed customers to use their acquired product key to register the application on up to 5 machines, the license for AutoCollage Touch 2009 cannot be transferred from the machine in which it came pre-installed. At this time, AutoCollage Touch 2009 is only available pre-installed by OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers). Customers that acquired AutoCollage 2008 from the Microsoft Store will continue to be supported by the Microsoft Research Community forum, and by the support email address for that application (acfeed at Microsoft.com). Meanwhile, customers that receive AutoCollate Touch 2009 pre-installed on a new machine should seek support through their OEM. The following page contains links to the contact information for OEM support teams: http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/cambridge/projects/autocollage/support.aspx October 01 Microsoft Store now open in AustraliaThe Microsoft online store just opened in Australia, and it has AutoCollage listed: http://www.microsoftstore.com.au/shop/Microsoft/AutoCollage-2008 May 14 Sharing AutoCollages as a Windows 7 ThemeYou used Microsoft Research AutoCollage 2008 to create a beautiful set of collages, and now want those to shuffle in your desktop background every 30 minutes? That is made easy by the Windows 7 Slide Show desktop background. By default, AutoCollage will save collages to a single folder under the standard “My Pictures” folder. The instructions below assume you want to use the collages saved to this default location for your desktop background: 1. Open the properties menu for the Windows 7 desktop and select the menu item Personalize. This will bring up the page “Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Personalization”. 2. Down on the page, click on the Desktop Background link. This will bring up the page “Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Personalization\Desktop Background”. 3. Click the Browse… button and on the “Browse For Folder” dialog expand the folder with your account name, and under it expand the “My Pictures” folder. You should then see the folder named “AutoCollage”. Select that folder and press OK. 4. At this point you will have all the pictures in the AutoCollage folder selected to appear in the background slide show. You may remove some pictures from the slide show and also change other properties, like if the pictures will appear in the name sequence or shuffle, the picture position and the interval for picture changes. After setting the slide show properties press Save changes. 5. Your selected AutoCollages are now part of the “Unsaved Theme”. Click on the Save Theme link under the “My Themes” section and name the theme. The collages will now appear in a slide show in your desktop background. That is already great, but there is another Windows 7 feature that makes it easy to share a theme with family and friends. Once you create a theme, just bring up the properties menu –right-clicking over the theme on the theme list – and select the menu item Save theme for sharing. You will then be able to save the theme as a file with the extension .themepack. All you need to do afterwards is to send this single file to friends and family also using Windows 7. All that those receiving your .themepack file have to do is to double-click on it to have the theme added to their gallery, and set as their background slide show! March 31 Images with “Date modified” in the future Customers using version 1.1 of AutoCollage will notice that this update will no longer lock files corresponding to the input images being shown by the application. As a consequence of this, before creating a new AutoCollage, the application will verify if the “Date modified” for each of the input images is more recent than the date/time when the file was last loaded. If that is the case, the input image is “refreshed”. A possible side-effect of this approach is that application may keep trying to refresh an input image that has the “Date modified” mistakenly set in the future. While uncommon, files with “Date modified” set in the future are at times created by the process to import a photo from a digital camera, mainly if the import process finishes with errors. If you face a scenario in which AutoCollage is not finishing the process to create a collage, verify if any of the input files has a “Date modified” set in the future, by looking at the file properties (right-click the file and choose the menu item “Properties”). A file with this problem can be easily fixed by opening it in any common image editor and saving back over the original file (Microsoft Paint is available in most Windows environments, and will properly fix this issue). February 17 Microsoft Research AutoCollage version 1.1 has been released! All current users of the earlier version of Microsoft Research AutoCollage 2008 can obtain the new version through Microsoft Update. To obtain the full installer for the latest version of Microsoft Research AutoCollage 2008, visit the official download page..
This update includes several changes in response to customer feedback, as well as stability and performance improvements:
- Ability to influence the selection of images for the AutoCollage. Users can influence which images are included in the collage, indicating which image should be the top-ranked and which one should be the second-ranked. Users can also indicate if an image should be preferred or avoided in the selection process. The image rating is automatically used to influence ranking, so an image with just 1 star will have less chance on being selected than an image with 5 stars. There is also visual feedback on which images will be included in the next AutoCollage.
- Richer integration with Windows Live Photo Gallery (WLPG). Users of the Windows Live Photo Gallery can now use the WLPG Extras menu item “Add to AutoCollage...” to add selected images to a new AutoCollage, allowing the use of images from different folders. - Network folder support. Users can now select a network folder as the root for the AutoCollage image browser. Images in the selected folder can now be added, removed or changed until the AutoCollage creation methods starts. - Custom output sizes. Define a custom output size, in inches, pixels or centimeters. The maximum output size is now 48”x48”, and up to 50 images can now be included in an AutoCollage. Thank you from the Microsoft Research Cambridge Innovation Development team. January 08 Microsoft Research Songsmith launchSongsmith generates musical accompaniment to match a singer’s voice. Just choose a musical style, sing into your PC’s microphone, and Songsmith will create backing music for you. Then share your songs with your friends and family, post your songs online, or create your own music videos. January 06 How to verify your AutoCollage download Microsoft Research AutoCollage 2008 has a free trial version that should be downloaded from the site at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=127040. It is highly recommend that potential customers download and try the application before purchasing the product key. Despite our best test efforts, it is very hard to anticipate the performance of image processing applications in different hardware configurations. At this time, the product keys can only be purchased from the Microsoft Store in the United Kingdom (for customers in the European Union) or in the United States of America. It came to our attention that some unauthorized sites are making the AutoCollage application available, for free or for a fee. Please make sure that you only download AutoCollage from the official site. The setup file for v1.0, named MicrosoftAutoCollageSetup.msi, has 7,171,072 bytes, and the file should have a digital signature from Microsoft Corporation, with a Timestamp of July 16, 2008 (you should be able to verify the time stamp opening the file properties dialog and looking at the “Digital Signatures” tab). November 28 Windows Marketplace transition to Microsoft StoreWindows Marketplace has transitioned from an ecommerce site to a reference site. Now customers in the United States of America should use the Microsoft Store USA to acquire a product key for Microsoft Research AutoCollage 2008. Those customers that previously acquired product keys and registered the software shouldn’t be affected., and each product key can be used in up to 5 machines. It is highly recommended that you make a backup copy of your product key, since the digital locker service will remain operational only through the first half of 2009. More instructions are available in the page http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/. November 21 The Many Uses of AutoCollageA lot of users have been writing back to our feedback alias with suggestions of features for AutoCollage. Thanks to all those taking their time to do that, and you can be sure that your feedback is being literally "counted".
Some users have been writing to our feedback alias with stories about the use of the collages created with the application. AutoCollages have been commonly used as postcards to celebrate the birth of a baby, included in posters for school exhibitions, and entire albums made of collages have been printed to celebrate events on churches or colleges. With the holiday season approaching, AutoCollage will certainly save time to many people in the preparation of holiday cards. Copy to a folder the best pictures from your family during the last year, select that folder in AutoCollage and you will quickly have a custom holiday card!
Please continue to send us your stories, and remember that there is a Flickr community where you can share nice collages publicly. October 07 Autocollage attends Photokina in cologne
AutoCollage attracted positive attention from all visitors, with many comments about the excellent and unique collages that the product can create. Strong interest in the use of this product was indicated by many of the attendees, with album cover collages and image set overviews being regular topics of conversation. Some visitors were already users of either the demo version or the full version of AutoCollage and their feedback about the usability and results of the product was not only good but also very useful to us as we consider the possibility of enhancements for any future versions. Look out for coverage coming up on Channel 10 of AutoCollage and also some of the other Microsoft and Microsoft Research products that were shown at the trade fair. For more information and to try AutoCollage free yourself for 30 days, please visit the official AutoCollage site September 19 Thank you!Feedback about AutoCollage has been mostly positive. This application was developed to showcase our great research results in creating a good summary of a set of images. Nowadays, it is rare that someone will start reading a book without first reading its summary or browsing through the table of contents. In the future, it may be common that you will be able to remember events from your life looking through AutoCollages.
We would like to thank everyone that has taken the time to go to our support forum and post their important questions and feedback about this application. We would like to also express our gratitude to all those customers who thought enough of AutoCollage to register the application. It may be just our wishful thinking, but there is also some anecdotal evidence to support the conviction that those customers are happy with the product, and using it to create the AutoCollages that are being posted all over the web, some of them in our own Flickr community. September 09 Install on up to five machines! We've been getting lots of comments in the AutoCollage forums from people who have more than one computer. This raises an interesting feature you may not be aware of: multiple AutoCollage installations.
When you download or purchase a copy of AutoCollage, the license allows you to install it on up to five of your machines. So if you've got multiple computers at home and have a copy of AutoCollage on one of them, you can share the love with up to four of your other computers!
